OOH, good question Andrea! That is actually a fairly controversial topic. So the idea is that you don’t want to dilute the stomach acid and digestive enzymes and make them less potent.
However, your body actually dumps several liters of water in with the food in the top of your small intestines with the bile, digestive enzymes, etc. to help dissolve the food as it goes down the small intestines and then gets absorbed. It then absorbs the water when the food gets to the large intestine as part of the poop making process. It is cleaned by the liver and then gets used again for more food.
So, in my opinion with the information available now, I don’t have the majority of my water with my meals, I try to get it in when I’m not eating. But when there are pills that need to be taken during the meal, I don’t worry about it or anything and I do drink some water with meals.
