Great question – the HCl challenge can be tricky this way! Usually, when you get to your upper threshold, you would feel a burning, warmth, beginnings of heartburn feeling. Although the burping maybe your personal sign. The only way to tell is to go up higher and see if it gets worse and play with if it is the foods/circumstances or the HCl.
I will add that when people can only tolerate 1 Hydrozyme (this may or may not be you), I consider it a sign of not tolerating HCl and that would be an indication to do some upper GI healing work and that there may be some H pylori to eradicate. We start with the Hydrozyme which is a super low dose HCl simply because so many people have H pylori and histories of upper GI irritation with heartburn and reflux. And we work up super slowly so that it isn’t too much too fast especially for these people.
The Hydrozyme isn’t really meant to be a supplement that anyone uses for long term supplementation because it isn’t high enough to be therapeutic. It is really just used for the HCl challenge to see where people are at and to more gently work them up into a regular dose. That’s why the Betaine plus HP is 5 times as strong and that would be the ongoing, long-term supplement.
So, I’d try the 2 Hydrozymes and see how it goes…. let me know 🙂
Thanks for bringing this up and clarifying, Kathleen! I think this was probably a confusion for others too!
